Who needs a medical certificate in Brunei?

Office workers, shift workers, students and travellers are the groups in Brunei who most often need a medical certificate. Each one runs into the need differently, from a missed shift to a flight they cannot take.

Government and private sector staff in Bandar Seri Begawan often need a note for a day or two off with a fever or a stomach bug. Workers in the oil and gas towns of Seria and Kuala Belait keep long shifts, and missing one may call for paperwork.

Students at Universiti Brunei Darussalam and other campuses may need a note for a missed class, test or exam.

Weather plays a part too. The wetter months toward the end of the year bring colds, coughs and fevers, and dengue is a known risk across the region. A traveller who falls ill before a flight from Brunei International Airport may need an unfit to travel note for the airline.

An online request fits these moments because you can apply from home or a hotel room while unwell. Whether your employer, school or airline accepts the note is their decision, so check with them first.

Which medical certificate do you need in Brunei?

Four options on the DrCertificate form

The right certificate depends on why you need it. The DrCertificate form lists four options: Sick Leave, Unfit to Travel, Work From Home and Medical Fitness Certificate. Pick the one that matches what your employer, school or airline asked for.

Sick leave certificate

For time off work or study because of illness. Choose the Sick Leave option on the form. A general medical certificate uses the same option.

Work from home certificate

For days when you can still work but should stay away from the office while unwell. Choose the Work From Home option.

Unfit to fly certificate

For when illness stops you from taking a booked flight and the airline wants a doctor's note. Choose the Unfit to Travel option.

Medical fitness certificate

For proof of good health for a job, a course or a sport. Fit to work, fit to fly and sports fitness requests all use the Medical Fitness Certificate option.

What should you have ready before you apply?

Have your personal details, the reason and dates, and any wording the organisation asked for ready before you start. Preparing these saves time and cuts down on follow-up questions.

Your name must match your ID.

  • Personal details and email

Your full name as shown on your ID, plus an email address you check often.

  • Reason and dates

Why you need the certificate and the dates it should cover.

  • Requested wording

Any form or wording your employer, school or airline asked you to provide.

  • Symptoms and records

When your symptoms started, how they affect you, and any existing records that help the doctor.

What happens when the doctor reviews your request?

The doctor reviews your symptoms, the dates you asked for and the reason for the certificate, then decides whether issuing one is appropriate. Paying for the review does not guarantee a certificate.

Doctors on DrCertificate are independent. Each one reads your form answers and checks that your name, ID and details line up. When something is unclear, the doctor may ask follow-up questions in the chat before deciding.

DrCertificate does not diagnose, treat or prescribe.

The platform connects you with the doctor and sends you the result. A certificate is issued only when the doctor finds it suitable for your situation, and the dates on it are the doctor's call. For generic symptoms, sick leave and work from home notes in most South East Asian countries go up to 7 days, and fitness notes are generally valid for 30 days.

What if the doctor cannot issue your certificate?

If the doctor cannot issue your certificate, nothing is sent and the payment is not refunded. Doctors decline about 2% of requests.

The usual reasons are details that do not match, with the name and ID being different, or symptoms and answers that are inconsistent. A doctor may also judge that your situation needs a physical examination.

In that case, visit a local clinic or hospital in Brunei for an in person check. For questions about your request, email care@drcertificate.com.

A refund is given only for a verified technical fault reported within 24 hours.

How quickly can you get a medical certificate in Brunei?

A typical request from Brunei is decided in about 30 minutes. Missing details, a name that does not match your ID, or follow up questions from the doctor can add time.

Will your employer, school or airline in Brunei accept it?

Your employer, school or airline in Brunei decides whether to accept an online certificate, so ask before you apply. DrCertificate cannot promise acceptance.

Brunei's Employment Order 2009 sets the rules for workers. Under section 72, an employee with at least 6 months of service gets paid sick leave of up to 14 days a year without hospitalisation, or up to 60 days a year when hospitalisation is necessary.

The Order requires sick leave to be certified by a medical practitioner, and section 2 defines that as a practitioner registered under Brunei's Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act, Chapter 112. Doctors on DrCertificate are registered with a medical council. Ask HR whether a note from them counts toward paid sick leave.

One more rule matters. Under section 72, subsection 4, certified sick leave can be treated as absence without permission if you did not inform, or try to inform, your employer within 48 hours of it starting.

Airlines set their own rules for fit to fly and unfit to fly notes, and schools and sports bodies have their own policies.

When is an online certificate not right for you in Brunei?

An online certificate is not right for emergencies, legal matters or insurance claims. In a medical emergency in Brunei, call 991 for an ambulance or go straight to the nearest hospital emergency department.

DrCertificate certificates are not for legal purposes, cannot be used for insurance, and are not for submission in India. Applicants must be 16 or older.

Visit a clinic or hospital in person if your symptoms are severe, getting worse or lasting beyond a week, or if you need tests, treatment or a prescription. A doctor who can examine you is the better choice there.
