What is a medical certificate for an ankle sprain?

A medical certificate for ankle sprain is a signed note from a certified doctor that records your consultation about an ankle injury and states any rest period or work arrangement the doctor considers suitable. You would usually show it to your employer, school or university.

For an ankle sprain, the usual choice is a sick leave certificate or a work from home certificate.

DrCertificate itself does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. The certificate reflects the doctor's view after a digital chat consultation, and it is not a treatment plan or a record of scans and tests.

Which kinds of ankle sprain can a doctor consider online?

A doctor on DrCertificate can consider mild and moderate ankle sprains described through chat, while severe injuries need an in person check. An ankle sprain happens when the ligaments around the ankle stretch or tear, most often after rolling the foot inward on uneven ground, during sport or on stairs.

Doctors often describe sprains by grade.

The doctor decides whether any rest period is suitable, and how long it should be, based on what you share in the consultation. No set number of days is promised. According to the NHS, most sprains and strains feel better after 2 weeks, while severe ones can take months to get back to normal.

  • Mild sprain

The ligament is stretched with little or no tearing. Pain and swelling are present, but most people can still walk with discomfort.

  • Moderate sprain

The ligament is partly torn. Swelling and bruising are more visible, and putting weight on the foot hurts.

  • Severe sprain

The ligament is torn through and the ankle can feel unstable. A severe sprain often needs a physical examination or an X-ray, so a chat consultation is not the right place to start.

What should you tell the doctor about your ankle sprain?

Tell the doctor how your ankle sprain happened, when it started and how it affects you today. Clear, honest details give the doctor what they need to make a decision.

Cover these points in the form.

  • Your symptoms

Pain, swelling, bruising, stiffness and whether you can stand or walk on the foot.

  • Onset and severity

The date of the injury, how the ankle has changed since then and how bad the pain feels.

  • Reports you already have

Details from any X-ray, scan or clinic visit, with dates.

  • The leave you need

The dates you are asking for and whether you need rest or a work from home arrangement.

When is an ankle sprain not suitable for an online certificate?

An ankle sprain is not suitable for an online certificate when the injury shows signs that need emergency care. The NHS says to seek emergency care if any of the following apply to you.

DrCertificate is only for suitable non emergency situations and does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. The doctor may decline a request that cannot be assessed safely by chat.

Go to an emergency department or an urgent clinic first.

  • You heard a crack A crack at the moment of injury can point to a broken bone.
  • The ankle has changed shape The injured part looks deformed or points at an odd angle.
  • Numbness or tingling The area is numb, tingling or has pins and needles.
  • Skin colour or temperature changes The skin around the injury looks blue or grey or is cold to touch.

Which certificate should you choose for an ankle sprain?

Most people with an ankle sprain choose Sick Leave or Work From Home on the application form. Pick the option that matches what your employer or school is asking for.

What happens if the doctor does not issue a certificate for an ankle sprain?

If the doctor does not issue a certificate, you receive no certificate and the payment stays non refundable. Each doctor makes an independent decision based on the consultation.

Doctors decline about 2% of requests. The usual reasons are details that do not match, like a name that differs from the ID, or symptoms and details that are inconsistent. A sprain with emergency warning signs is not suitable for chat either.

A certificate cannot be corrected once issued, unless the fault is from the medical team.
