Work from home or sick leave certificate: what you need to know and how to get one
Not sure whether to ask for a work from home or sick leave certificate? This guide explains the difference, when each one fits and how to request the right one online.
On DrCertificate, an independent registered doctor reviews every request after a digital chat consultation and decides whether to issue a certificate. The service is for people in 10 South East Asian countries, from Singapore and Malaysia to the Philippines and Vietnam.
The short answer on a work from home or sick leave certificate
Choose a work from home certificate if you can still do your job from home but should not go in, and a sick leave certificate if you cannot work at all. On DrCertificate, an independent registered doctor reviews your chat consultation and decides whether to issue either one. Notes for generic symptoms usually cover up to 7 days.

What should you know before you choose?
Sick leave means you cannot work
A sick leave certificate states that you are unfit to work or study for a set period.
Work from home means you can work off site
A work from home certificate states that you can keep working, from home, for a set period.
A doctor makes the call
An independent doctor with an MBBS, MD or MS reviews each request and may decline it.
Generic symptoms usually get up to 7 days
In most South East Asian countries, both notes go up to 7 days for generic symptoms.
Your employer decides on acceptance
Check with HR or your school before applying, because the receiving organisation has the last word.
What is a work from home certificate, and how is it different from a sick leave certificate?
A work from home certificate is a doctor's note stating that you are well enough to keep working but should do it from home for a set period. A sick leave certificate states that you are not fit to work or attend classes for a set period. The first keeps you productive. The second takes you off duty.
Neither note is a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Neither one forces your employer to approve a home arrangement or paid leave, since those decisions stay with your employer and its policies.
On the DrCertificate form, choose the Work From Home option for the first note and the Sick Leave option, marked for university or work, for the second.
People often confuse these with other notes. A medical fitness certificate says you are fit for a job, course or activity. An unfit to travel note is about flying, not your desk. A general medical certificate is requested through the Sick Leave option too.
When do you need a work from home or sick leave certificate?
You need one of these certificates when your employer, university or school asks for a doctor's record of why you are not working or attending as usual. The request usually comes from HR, a team lead, a faculty office or a registrar. Each one wants proof from a doctor, not only your message saying you feel unwell.
Pick sick leave when you cannot work or study at all.
Fever, vomiting or a migraine that keeps you in bed fits here. HR uses the note to record the day as medical leave instead of unpaid leave or an unexplained absence.
Pick work from home when you can still log in and handle your tasks but should stay away from the office or campus. A mild cold you do not want to spread, a sprained ankle that makes commuting hard, or back pain that makes a long ride painful are common examples.
Employers ask for this note because a home arrangement changes where you work. HR wants a medical reason on file before agreeing to it. Team leads also use it to plan cover for tasks that need you on site.
Travel is a separate matter. If the issue is a flight, an airline looks for an unfit to travel note, not either of these.
Work from home or sick leave certificate at a glance
The table compares both notes side by side. The doctor decides the number of days case by case, and any sign of a serious or worsening illness calls for an in person visit instead.

Who issues a work from home or sick leave certificate?
An independent doctor issues every work from home or sick leave certificate requested through DrCertificate. Each doctor holds an MBBS, MD or MS and is registered with a medical council. The doctor reads your form, chats with you and decides alone whether a certificate is issued.
DrCertificate is the platform between you and the doctor.
DrCertificate runs the online form, takes payment through Stripe and passes your request to a doctor for review. The platform does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and only the doctor decides on the certificate. Health Venture OU is the company behind DrCertificate, with an office at KMC Armstrong Corporate Center in Makati City, Metro Manila.
That split matters when HR asks who signed your note. The answer is a qualified doctor, not a website.
How do you get a work from home or sick leave certificate online, step by step?
Getting a work from home or sick leave certificate on DrCertificate takes five steps, all handled through a form and a text chat. DrCertificate offers no video calls and no clinic visits.
Your answers on the form carry the most weight, so take care with them.

ຂັ້ນຕອນທີ 1: Choose the right option
Open the form and pick Work From Home if you can still work, or Sick Leave if you cannot. Enter your name and ID the way they appear on your documents, and describe your symptoms as they really are.
ຂັ້ນຕອນທີ 2: Pay through Stripe
Pay the fee for your country through Stripe. The payment is non refundable, so check your answers before you pay.
ຂັ້ນຕອນທີ 3: Chat with the doctor
An independent doctor reviews your request in a digital chat and may ask follow up questions about your symptoms and dates.
Step 4: Wait for the decision

What should a work from home or sick leave certificate include?
A work from home or sick leave certificate usually shows your full name, the dates it covers, its purpose and the issuing doctor's details. The purpose line tells HR whether you are off sick or working from home, so it has to match what they asked for.
Run the checklist below before you send it.
Ask your HR team or school office about their own format first. A company may want its leave form attached, or a note that names the reason for the absence. Knowing that before you apply saves a second request.
A certificate cannot be corrected once issued, unless the fault came from the medical team. Get the details right on the form.
Name
Your name matches your ID and your HR or school records.
Dates
The dates cover the days you are asking for.
Type
The note says work from home or sick leave, whichever HR requested.
Doctor details
The doctor's name and qualification are shown.
Will your employer or school accept a work from home or sick leave certificate?
Your employer, university or school decides whether to accept a work from home or sick leave certificate. DrCertificate and the doctor do not control that decision. DrCertificate encourages every applicant to check that the place of submission accepts online medical notes before choosing the service.
A work from home note supports a request. In the Philippines, Republic Act No. 11165 says a private sector employer may offer a telecommuting program to its employees on a voluntary basis, on terms and conditions both sides agree upon. Your manager can still say no to a home arrangement even with a valid note.
Certificates get questioned for plain reasons. The wrong type was sent, a detail is missing, the name does not match HR records, or the company only accepts notes from its own panel clinics.
If HR questions your note, ask what is missing. Share the doctor details printed on the certificate. If the company wants a different type, or only accepts its own clinics, follow that route, because an issued certificate cannot be changed.
When is an online work from home or sick leave certificate not the right choice?
An online certificate is the wrong choice when you need urgent care, a document the service does not issue, or a note for a purpose it does not cover. The doctor can also decline any request. Doctors decline about 2% of requests, usually when the name and ID do not match or the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent.
Go to an emergency department for chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting or heavy bleeding. DrCertificate is for suitable non emergency situations only.
DrCertificate certificates are not for submission in India, not for legal purposes and must not be used for insurance. Applicants must be at least 16. Recovery and caretaker certificates are not offered, so a note to look after a sick child or parent is not available here.
If your symptoms last beyond 7 days, see a doctor in person.
Work from home or sick leave certificates in Singapore, Malaysia and the rest of South East Asia
DrCertificate serves people in 10 South East Asian countries. The list covers Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam are served too, as are the Philippines and Thailand.
Sick leave and work from home rules differ by country and by employer. National law sets the minimum, and company policy often adds its own conditions on notes and days.
Check the official rules with your country's labour or manpower ministry. In Singapore that is the Ministry of Manpower. In Malaysia it is the Department of Labour, under the Employment Act. In the Philippines it is the Department of Labor and Employment.
The Philippines also has a law on home working. Republic Act No. 11165 defines telecommuting as a work arrangement that lets a private sector employee work from an alternative workplace using telecommunication or computer technologies.
Confirm with your employer, school or airline before you apply.

Frequently asked questions about work from home and sick leave certificates
A backdated certificate is not guaranteed. The doctor sets the dates based on what you share in the chat and certifies only what the consultation supports. If you already missed a day, say so plainly on the form and let the doctor decide whether that day can be covered.
The doctor decides the length case by case. In most South East Asian countries, sick leave and work from home notes go up to 7 days for generic symptoms. If you expect to need longer, or your symptoms keep getting worse, see a doctor in person for a proper examination.
Yes, by text chat only. The doctor reviews your form and may ask follow up questions in a digital chat before deciding. DrCertificate does not offer video or in person consultations, so reply promptly and give accurate answers to keep the review moving.
You receive no certificate and the payment is not refunded. Doctors decline requests when details are wrong, like a name that does not match the ID, or when the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent. Check every entry before paying to avoid this.
Only if your employer or school policy requires one. Leave policies differ, and one workplace may accept a message to your manager for a single day while another asks for a note from day one. Check your handbook or ask HR, and request a certificate when the policy calls for one.
No, not in most cases. A certificate cannot be corrected once issued unless the fault came from the medical team. If you picked sick leave but needed work from home, you would need a new request, so confirm the right type with HR first.
Choose the work from home certificate. That note tells your employer you can keep working but should stay home for a period. If you are too unwell to concentrate or log in, choose sick leave instead, and let the doctor decide what fits your symptoms.
