Who needs a medical certificate in Thailand?

Office workers, factory staff, students and travellers are the groups in Thailand who ask for medical certificates most often. Workers need one when a short illness keeps them home, and students need one for missed classes or exams.

Thai labour law gives employees paid sick leave of up to thirty working days a year under Section 57 of the Labour Protection Act. For absences of three days or more, Section 32 lets the employer ask for a certificate.

The rainy season brings its own wave of fevers, colds and stomach bugs.

Picture a visitor who falls ill in Phuket or Chiang Mai the day before a flight home from Suvarnabhumi Airport. The airline wants paperwork, and the visitor wants rest. A student at a Bangkok university who wakes with a fever on exam day faces the same kind of problem. Neither person wants half a day in a clinic waiting room for a note about a cold.

An online request lets them describe their symptoms from bed and wait for a doctor's decision by email. Whether the employer, school or airline accepts an online certificate is their call, so check first.

Which medical certificate do you need in Thailand?

Pick the form option that matches why you need the certificate

The right certificate depends on who will read it and why. The DrCertificate application form shows four options: Sick Leave, Unfit to Travel, Work From Home and Medical Fitness Certificate.

Sick leave certificate

For time off work or university when you are unwell. Choose Medical Certificate, Sick Leave on the form.

General medical certificate

For a general doctor's note about your health. This request also uses the Sick Leave option.

Unfit to fly certificate

For telling an airline you are not well enough to travel. Choose the Unfit to Travel option.

Medical fitness certificate

For confirming you are fit for a job, study, sport or a flight. Fit to work, sports fitness and fit to fly requests all use the Medical Fitness Certificate option.

How do you get an online sick leave certificate in Thailand?

You get an online sick leave certificate in Thailand in four steps, all from your phone or laptop. DrCertificate has no video calls and no in person consultations, so the doctor works from your form and the chat.

What should you have ready before you apply?

Have your personal details, a working email address and the dates you need before you open the form. Five minutes of preparation saves back and forth with the doctor.

Check spellings twice. A certificate cannot be corrected once issued, unless the mistake came from the medical team.

  • Your details

Full name and ID details that match each other, plus an email address you check often.

  • Reason and dates

Why you need the certificate and which days it should cover.

  • Requested wording

Any form or wording your employer, school or airline asked for.

  • Symptoms and records

When your symptoms started, how they affect you and any existing medical records.

What happens when the doctor reviews your request?

The doctor reads your form and decides whether a certificate fits what you describe. The doctor looks at your symptoms, when they started, the dates you asked for and whether your name and ID match.

Questions are common. The doctor may message you in the chat to clarify a symptom or a date, and a quick, honest reply keeps things moving.

DrCertificate is a platform that connects you with independent doctors. The platform does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. The doctor's role in this service is to decide on the certificate and nothing more, which is why the chat stays focused on your symptoms and dates.

Paying does not buy a certificate.

The doctor issues one only when the request makes medical sense to them.

What if the doctor cannot issue your certificate?

If the doctor declines, you receive no certificate and the fee is not refunded. Doctors decline about 2% of requests, when the name and ID do not match or when the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent.

Payments are non refundable, with one exception: a verified technical fault reported within 24 hours.

If your request is declined or your symptoms get worse, see a doctor in person at a local clinic or hospital in Thailand. For help with your request, email care@drcertificate.com.

What does an online medical certificate cost in Thailand?

The fee for Thailand appears on the form before you pay, because DrCertificate prices by country. For comparison, the service costs 25 SGD in Singapore, 399 pesos in the Philippines and 30 MYR in Malaysia.

The fee covers the doctor's review and, if approved, the certificate as a PDF by email. You pay through Stripe, and the fee is non refundable, even when the doctor declines.

How quickly can you get a medical certificate in Thailand?

A typical request takes about 30 minutes. Missing details, a name that does not match your ID or a follow up question from the doctor can add time.

Fitness cases run on Indian Standard Time, which is 90 minutes behind Thailand.

Will your employer, school or airline in Thailand accept it?

The organisation receiving the certificate decides whether to accept it, so ask your employer, school, airline or sports body before you apply. DrCertificate encourages every customer to confirm that the place of submission accepts online medical notes.

Thai labour law sets the ground rules for workplaces. Under Section 32 of the Labour Protection Act, an employer may require a certificate from a first class physician or an official medical establishment when sick leave runs three days or more. An employee unable to produce one shall give an explanation instead.

Where the employer provides its own physician, that physician issues the certificate, unless the employee is unable to be examined by that physician. A company handbook can still set its own rule for shorter absences.

Ask HR whether an online certificate counts.

Airlines set their own fit to fly and unfit to fly rules, and those rules differ between carriers. Schools and universities write their own attendance policies too.

When is an online certificate not right for you in Thailand?

An online certificate is not right for emergencies. Call 1669 for emergency medical services in Thailand, or go to the nearest hospital.

DrCertificate certificates are not for legal purposes, insurance claims or submission in India. Applicants must be 16 or older.

Book an in person visit at a local clinic or hospital when symptoms are severe, getting worse or lasting longer than expected. The same applies when an employer asks for a physical examination. Chest pain, trouble breathing, a high fever that will not come down and bleeding gums during a fever all need hands on care straight away.
