Who needs an unfit to fly certificate in Laos?

Travellers, workers and students are the groups in Laos who usually need an unfit to fly certificate. The need comes up when an illness or injury lands close to a booked flight and someone has to show why they should not board.

Visitors often fly out through Wattay International Airport in Vientiane or Luang Prabang International Airport. A stomach bug picked up on the road, a high fever or a fresh injury can make a long flight a bad idea, and the airline or travel company may want a doctor's note before it changes the booking. The rainy season, roughly May to October, brings more mosquito borne illness, including dengue.

Foreign staff based in Vientiane and Lao students heading abroad face the same problem when a planned trip clashes with being unwell.

An online request lets you describe your situation from a hotel room or from home, without travelling to a clinic while sick. Whether your airline, employer or school accepts the certificate is their decision, so check with them first.

Which medical certificate do you need in Laos?

What should you have ready before you apply?

Have your personal details and travel information ready before you start, because missing facts slow the doctor down.

Preparation takes only minutes and saves a round of follow-up questions.

  • Personal details and email

Your full name as shown on your ID, your age and an email address you can check right away.

  • Reason and dates

Why you cannot fly, when symptoms started and the flight date or dates the certificate needs to cover.

  • Requested wording

Any form or wording your airline, employer or school asked for.

  • Symptoms and records

A clear description of your symptoms and any existing medical records that relate to them.

What happens when the doctor reviews your request?

The doctor checks whether the information you submitted supports an unfit to fly certificate and issues one only if it is medically appropriate. Paying the fee does not guarantee a certificate.

The doctor reads your symptoms, when they started, your flight dates and the personal details you entered. Consistency matters. A name that does not match your ID, or symptoms that conflict with other answers, can stop a request.

Expect questions.

The doctor may ask follow-up questions in the digital chat to fill gaps before deciding. DrCertificate is the platform that connects you with that doctor, and DrCertificate does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. The decision belongs to the doctor alone. If you need treatment, see a clinic or hospital in Laos.

What if the doctor cannot issue your certificate?

If the doctor cannot issue your certificate, no certificate is sent and the fee is not refunded. Doctors decline when details are wrong, like a name that does not match the ID, or when the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent.

Payments are non refundable, with one exception. A verified technical fault reported within 24 hours can qualify. A certificate cannot be corrected once issued unless the fault came from the medical team.

If your request is declined, visit a clinic or hospital in Laos for an in person assessment. For help, email care@drcertificate.com.

What does an unfit to fly certificate cost in Laos?

The fee for an unfit to fly certificate depends on your country, and the price for Laos is shown on the DrCertificate form before you pay. The fee covers the doctor's review of your request and a PDF certificate by email if approved.

Payment goes through Stripe. The fee is non refundable, including when the doctor declines.

How quickly can you get an unfit to fly certificate in Laos?

Turnaround is about 30 minutes once a request with all its details reaches the doctor.

Missing details, a name and ID mismatch, or follow-up questions in the chat add time. For fitness cases, doctors work 9 am to 9 pm IST Monday to Saturday and 10 am to 8 pm IST on Sunday. Laos runs 90 minutes ahead of IST.

Will your airline, employer or school in Laos accept it?

Acceptance is decided by the organisation receiving your certificate, not by DrCertificate or the doctor. Ask your airline, employer, school or travel provider whether it accepts an online medical certificate before you apply.

Airlines set their own rules, and unfit to fly needs differ from one carrier to the next.

Lao Airlines is a useful example. Its Conditions of Carriage say it may refuse carriage under the Lao Civil Aviation Law when a passenger's health condition means flying may cause harm to that passenger, other passengers or the flight. A passenger refused under Article 8.1.3, which includes health grounds, is entitled to a refund of the fare or the unused portion, after fees and penalties under the fare rules.

If a passenger who has started a trip cannot continue within the ticket's validity for a health reason, Lao Airlines may extend validity for up to three months from the certificate date, provided a competent medical authority certifies the reason. Ask the airline whether an online certificate meets that standard.

For sick leave, Lao labour law sets the rules, and your employer can tell you what proof it wants.

When is an online certificate not right for you in Laos?

An online certificate is not right for emergencies, legal matters or insurance claims. In a medical emergency in Laos, call 1195 for an ambulance or go to the nearest hospital.

DrCertificate certificates are not for legal purposes, must not be used for insurance, and are not for submission in India. Applicants must be 16 or older.

See a doctor in person at a clinic or hospital in Laos if your symptoms are severe or getting worse, if you need a physical examination, or if your airline wants its own medical clearance form completed after an exam.

Breathing difficulty, chest pain and heavy bleeding need urgent care, not an online form.
