The short answer on sick leave applications for school

For a one day absence, a self written sick leave application for school is generally enough. Longer absences, or schools that ask for proof, call for a medical certificate. Through DrCertificate, an independent doctor reviews your online request and decides whether to issue one. Your school decides whether it accepts an online certificate. Applicants must be 16 or older.

What should students know first about sick leave for school?

Students should know five facts before writing a sick leave application for school.

  • A letter often covers one day

A self written leave letter is generally enough for a single day off school.

  • Longer absences need more

Longer absences, or school rules that ask for proof, usually call for a doctor's certificate.

  • Rules differ by school

Schools, colleges and universities set their own medical leave rules, so check your institution's current policy first.

  • The doctor decides

On DrCertificate, an independent MBBS, MD or MS doctor decides whether to issue a certificate and what period it covers.

  • Typical cover is up to 7 days

In most South East Asian countries, sick leave notes go up to 7 days for generic symptoms.

What is a sick leave application for school?

A sick leave application for school is a request to excuse a student's absence because of illness, sent to a teacher, class adviser or school office. The application is often a short letter from the student or a parent. When the school asks for proof, a medical certificate goes with it.

The two documents do different jobs.

The letter is your own account of why you were away. A sick leave medical certificate is a doctor's statement that you were assessed and found unfit to attend for a stated period. A sick leave certificate is not a fitness certificate, and it does not confirm that you have recovered or clear you for sports.

On DrCertificate, the matching choice is the Medical Certificate Sick Leave option, labelled for university and work. If your school wants a student fitness or good health certificate instead, choose the Medical Fitness Certificate option. Recovery certificates are not offered.

When do you need a sick leave application for school?

  • You need a sick leave application for school whenever illness keeps you out of class and your school asks for a written reason. For a single missed day, a self written letter is generally enough. A doctor's certificate becomes useful when the absence runs longer, clashes with an exam or graded task, or when the school's policy asks for medical proof.

  • The request usually comes from a class adviser, a registrar, a guidance office or a university faculty office.

  • Schools ask for proof for practical reasons. Attendance records count toward promotion and course credit in plenty of institutions, and a medical note lets staff excuse an absence with confidence. A note also reassures the school when an illness could spread to classmates. Students 16 and over at college or university face the same question when they miss lectures, labs or exams.

  • In the Philippines, DepEd Order No. 14, s. 2020, issued for COVID-19, said learners who had symptoms in the last 14 days, with no relevant travel or exposure history, shall seek medical advice and the necessary medical certificate before reporting back to school. The order shows that a school can ask for a certificate after an illness, not only during it.

Who issues a sick leave certificate for school?

An independent doctor with an MBBS, MD or MS qualification issues every sick leave certificate requested through DrCertificate. All doctors on the platform are registered with a medical council.

DrCertificate is the platform, not the doctor. DrCertificate connects applicants with doctors and does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. The company behind the platform is Health Venture OU, with an office at KMC Armstrong Corporate Center in Makati City, Metro Manila.

Only the doctor decides.

The doctor reads your form, talks with you in a digital chat and chooses whether a certificate is medically appropriate and what period it covers. Doctors decline about 2% of requests, usually because the name and ID do not match or because the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent. Paying for a request does not buy a certificate.

How do you get a sick leave certificate for school online, step by step?

You get a sick leave certificate for school online by choosing the Sick Leave option on the DrCertificate form, paying, and chatting with a doctor who decides whether to issue it. The whole request happens in writing.

There are no video or in person consultations.

What should a sick leave application for school include?

A sick leave application for school should include the student's full name, class or course, the dates missed, the reason for absence and a signature from the student or a parent. A medical certificate attached to it usually shows the patient's name, the consultation date, the period of leave and the doctor's details.

Ask the school office about its own format first. A certificate cannot be corrected once issued unless the fault is from the medical team, so check every detail on the form before you submit.

Run a quick check before you hand it in.

  • The name matches

The name on the certificate matches your school ID and enrolment records.

  • The dates match

The leave dates on the certificate match the days in your letter.

  • The document is the right type

You attach a sick leave certificate, not a fitness certificate, unless the school asked for fitness.

  • The school format is done

If your school has its own leave form, you fill that in too.

Will your school or university accept an online sick leave certificate?

Your school or university decides whether it accepts an online sick leave certificate, not DrCertificate and not the doctor. Policies differ between institutions, so ask the class adviser or registrar before you apply. DrCertificate encourages every customer to confirm that the place of submission accepts online medical notes first.

A certificate gets questioned for a handful of reasons. The wrong type was submitted, for example a fitness certificate when sick leave was needed. The dates do not match the absence. The name differs from school records. Or the school wants a doctor who can examine the student in person.

If your certificate is questioned, ask the office what it needs. You can point staff to the doctor details on the certificate, hand in your own leave letter alongside it, or see a local doctor in person if the school insists.

Email care@drcertificate.com if an error on the certificate came from the medical team.

When is an online sick leave certificate for school not the right choice?

The service is for suitable non emergency situations only. Trouble breathing, chest pain, a seizure or any sudden severe symptom needs in person or emergency care straight away.

Applicants must be at least 16, so younger pupils need a parent's letter or a visit to a local clinic. The doctor may also decline a request after reviewing it. Recovery and caretaker certificates are not offered, which means a parent cannot request a certificate to stay home with a sick child.

Certificates from DrCertificate are not for submission in India, not for legal purposes and must not be used for insurance.

The 10 countries are listed with links to their local sick leave pages, along with pages for Manila, Cebu and Davao.

What does a sick leave certificate for school cost and how long does it take?

A sick leave certificate request costs 25 SGD in Singapore, 399 pesos in the Philippines and 30 MYR in Malaysia. Prices in the other served countries depend on the country.

The price covers the doctor's review of your form, the chat consultation and, if approved, the PDF certificate sent by email. A decision usually takes about 30 minutes, depending on how clear and consistent your details are and whether the doctor needs to ask questions.
