What is a medical certificate for allergy?

A medical certificate for allergy is a signed note from a certified doctor stating that, based on your consultation, your allergy symptoms affect your ability to work, study or travel for a stated period. The note records the doctor's opinion and the dates covered.

The certificate is not a diagnosis. DrCertificate does not diagnose, treat or prescribe.

For most allergy flares, the Sick Leave option for university or work fits best. The Work From Home option suits people who can still do their job but should stay away from triggers at the office or on the commute. Employers, schools and universities are the usual readers of the certificate.

Which kinds of allergy can a doctor consider online?

A doctor can consider common, non emergency allergy symptoms through a chat consultation, from hay fever and itchy eyes to hives and mild skin reactions. The doctor looks at your symptoms, their timing and how badly they affect you before deciding anything.

The doctor decides whether any rest is needed and for how long, based on the consultation. No set number of days applies to an allergy, and a certificate is never automatic.

Severe reactions cannot be judged by chat.

Anyone with swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing or sudden confusion needs emergency care instead. The next sections explain what to share and when you should not use the form at all.

  • Hay fever and allergic rhinitis

Sneezing, a runny or blocked nose and itchy eyes, often triggered by pollen or dust. The NHS says hay fever can last for weeks or months.

  • Allergic eye irritation

Red, watery and itchy eyes that make screen work or reading hard.

  • Hives and skin rashes

Raised, itchy welts or a rash after contact with a trigger or after eating something.

  • Dust, mould and pet allergy

Nose, throat and eye symptoms that flare indoors or around animals.

What should you tell the doctor about your allergy?

Tell the doctor which allergy symptoms you have, when they started and how much they affect your work or study. Clear, honest details help the doctor reach a decision quickly.

Mention every point below in the form.

  • Your symptoms

Sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, a blocked nose, hives, rash or itching, and any trigger you suspect.

  • Onset, duration and severity

The date symptoms began, whether they come and go, and how hard they make daily tasks.

  • Reports you already have

Any allergy test results or notes from a previous doctor, where relevant.

  • The leave you need

The dates you are asking the certificate to cover.

When is an allergy not suitable for an online certificate?

An allergy is not suitable for an online certificate when there are signs of a serious allergic reaction, called anaphylaxis. The NHS says to seek emergency care if your lips, mouth, throat or tongue suddenly swell, if you struggle to breathe or swallow, or if you suddenly become very confused, drowsy or dizzy.

Call your local emergency number or go to the nearest emergency department straight away. Do not fill in a form first.

DrCertificate is only for suitable non emergency situations. The platform does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and the doctor may decline any request that is not right for a chat consultation.

Which certificate should you choose for an allergy?

Most people with an allergy flare choose the Sick Leave option, because it covers time away from work or university. The right choice depends on whether you can still work and whether travel is involved.

Match your situation to a row below.

Form optionWhen it suits someone with an allergy
Medical Certificate, Sick Leave for university or workAllergy symptoms stop you from working or attending classes. A general medical certificate also uses this option.
Medical Certificate, Work From HomeYou can still work but need to avoid office triggers like dust, pollen or animals, or a long commute.
Medical Certificate, Unfit to TravelAn allergy flare makes a planned trip or flight unwise.
Medical Fitness CertificateYour allergy has settled and you need a note confirming fitness for work, study or sport.

What happens if the doctor does not issue a certificate for allergy?

If the doctor does not issue a certificate, you receive no certificate and the payment is not refunded. Issuing is always the doctor's independent decision.

Requests are usually declined when details are wrong, like a name that does not match the ID, or when the symptoms and details shared do not add up. Signs of a serious reaction also mean chat is not suitable.

Check every detail before you submit, because a certificate cannot be corrected once issued unless the error came from the medical team. For help, email care@drcertificate.com.
