Who needs a medical certificate in the Philippines?

Workers, students and travellers are the groups in the Philippines who most often need a medical certificate. Each one usually needs the note fast, while feeling too unwell to queue at a clinic.

Picture a call centre agent in Makati or Cebu IT Park who wakes up with a fever before a night shift. HR wants a medical note, the agent wants to stay in bed, and the nearest clinic opens hours later. An online request through DrCertificate lets that agent describe symptoms by chat and wait for the doctor's decision at home.

Students in Manila, Cebu and Davao face the same problem when an illness lands on an exam day.

Weather plays a part too.

The rainy season, roughly June to November, brings flu, colds and dengue worries, and typhoons can make a trip to a clinic hard. Travellers who fall ill before a flight out of Ninoy Aquino International Airport or Mactan Cebu International Airport may need an unfit to travel note on short notice.

Whether an employer, school or airline accepts an online note is up to that organisation, so check first.

Which medical certificate do you need in the Philippines?

The certificate you need in the Philippines depends on why you need it, and DrCertificate's application form has four options to pick from. Each option covers more than one situation.

Sick leave certificate

For time off work or university when you are unwell. Choose Medical Certificate, Sick Leave on the form. A general medical certificate uses this option too.

Work from home certificate

For days when you can still work but should stay home, for example with a cold you do not want to pass on. Choose Medical Certificate, Work From Home.

Unfit to travel certificate

For when illness stops you from flying or travelling on your planned dates. Choose Medical Certificate, Unfit to Travel.

Medical fitness certificate

For employee fitness, student fitness and good health certificates. Sports fitness, fit to fly and fit to work requests use this option as well.

What should you have ready before you apply?

Have your personal details, a working email address, and the reason and dates for your certificate ready before you apply. Preparing these items first helps the doctor decide without delays.

  • Your details

Your full name and ID details as they appear on your ID, plus an email address you check often.

  • Reason and dates

Why you need the certificate and the dates it should cover.

  • Requested wording

Any form or wording your employer, school or airline asked for.

  • Symptoms and records

When symptoms began, how they affect you, and any prescriptions or past reports.

What happens when the doctor reviews your request?

The doctor checks whether your symptoms, dates and personal details make sense together, then decides whether a certificate is appropriate. Paying the fee does not guarantee a certificate.

During the digital chat, the doctor may ask follow-up questions. When did the fever start? Has it changed since? Does the leave period you asked for match what you describe? Clear, honest answers help the doctor reach a decision faster.

DrCertificate is a platform that connects you with independent doctors. DrCertificate does not diagnose, treat or prescribe.

A certificate is issued only when the doctor finds it appropriate.

What if the doctor cannot issue your certificate?

If the doctor cannot issue your certificate, the request is declined and the payment is not refunded. Doctors decline about 2% of requests, usually because the name and ID do not match or the symptoms shared are inconsistent.

Your next step is a visit to a local clinic or hospital, where a doctor can examine you in person.

Questions about a declined request can go to care@drcertificate.com. A refund is possible only for a verified technical fault reported within 24 hours.

How quickly can you get a medical certificate in the Philippines?

Turnaround is about 30 minutes for a typical DrCertificate request from the Philippines. The time stretches when details are missing or when the doctor needs to ask follow-up questions in the chat.

Fitness cases follow set hours in Indian Standard Time, which runs two and a half hours behind Philippine time. In Philippine time, fitness cases are reviewed from 11:30 am to 11:30 pm Monday to Saturday and from 12:30 pm to 10:30 pm on Sunday.

Will your employer, school or airline in the Philippines accept it?

Acceptance is decided by the organisation receiving the certificate, not by DrCertificate or the doctor. Ask your employer, school, airline or sports body whether it accepts online medical notes before you apply.

Philippine rules set the context. Article 95 of the Labor Code gives employees with at least one year of service five days of paid service incentive leave a year, though establishments regularly employing fewer than ten people are exempt. Under the rules that carry out Republic Act 11199, an employee confined outside a hospital must notify the employer within five calendar days after confinement starts. Hospital confinement needs no notice to the employer.

SSS sickness benefit claims use their own form.

The Social Security System asks for form Med 01688 showing the full diagnosis, recommended sick leave days and a legible licence number, plus the clinic address and contact number. DrCertificate certificates are not for insurance claims, so treat that form as a separate requirement.

Airlines set their own fit to fly and unfit to fly rules, and those differ from carrier to carrier.

When is an online certificate not right for you in the Philippines?

An online certificate is not right for emergencies. Call 911, the national emergency hotline in the Philippines, or go to the nearest hospital for chest pain, trouble breathing, heavy bleeding or sudden weakness.

DrCertificate certificates are not for legal purposes, insurance claims or submission in India. Applicants must be 16 or older.

Visit a local clinic or hospital in person when symptoms are severe, keep getting worse, or need tests, treatment or a prescription. Those needs fall outside what an online request can cover.
