What is a medical certificate for cold and cough?

A cold and cough medical certificate is a note from a certified doctor confirming that you consulted them about cold or cough symptoms, with any rest period the doctor judges suitable. The certificate records the doctor's decision after a chat consultation.

DrCertificate does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. The platform connects you with an independent doctor, and that doctor alone decides what the certificate says.

Most people with a cold and cough choose a sick leave certificate or a work from home certificate.

You would usually show the certificate to an employer, a school or a university that asks for proof of illness before it excuses an absence from work or class.

Which kinds of cold and cough can a doctor consider online?

A doctor on DrCertificate can consider the common, everyday forms of cold and cough during a chat consultation, provided the symptoms are mild to moderate and nothing points to an emergency. The doctor reads what you share and decides whether a certificate fits your situation.

The doctor also decides the period of rest, if any. No condition comes with a fixed number of days. In most South East Asian countries, sick leave and work from home notes for generic symptoms go up to 7 days.

Not every cough belongs in a chat.

A cough that comes with breathing trouble, chest pain or blood needs a doctor who can examine you in person, so the online doctor may decline that request.

  • Common cold

A runny or blocked nose, sneezing and a mild sore throat.

  • Dry cough

A tickly cough with no phlegm, often during or after a cold.

  • Wet or chesty cough

A cough that brings up mucus, with a feeling of chest congestion.

  • Sore throat and hoarseness

Throat pain or a weak, rough voice alongside cold symptoms.

  • Sinus congestion

A blocked nose with pressure across the face or a headache.

What should you tell the doctor about your cold and cough?

Tell the doctor which cold and cough symptoms you have, when they started and how severe they feel. Clear, honest details give the doctor what they need to make a decision.

Include the date your symptoms began and whether they are getting better or worse. If a clinic has already tested you, mention the result. State the leave period you are asking for and whether you need sick leave or work from home.

  • Nose and sinuses

A runny or blocked nose, sneezing, sinus pressure or a headache.

  • Cough

A persistent cough, dry or wet, with or without chest congestion.

  • Throat and voice

    A sore throat or hoarseness.

When is a cold and cough not suitable for an online certificate?

A cold and cough is not suitable for an online certificate when your symptoms suggest you need urgent care. The NHS advises asking for an urgent doctor appointment if any of the signs below apply to you.

If you notice one of these signs, see a doctor in person or contact your local emergency services straight away. Do not wait for a certificate.

DrCertificate is only for suitable non emergency situations and does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. A doctor may decline any request that is not suitable for a chat consultation.

  • A cough that is very bad or quickly gets worse Sudden worsening needs a doctor who can examine you.
  • Feeling very unwell A cold should not leave you struggling to cope.
  • Chest pain or trouble breathing Pain in the chest or finding it hard to breathe needs urgent help.
  • Coughing up blood Any blood in what you cough up needs urgent in person care.

Which certificate should you choose for a cold and cough?

Choose the form option that matches what you need the note for. Sick leave suits most cold and cough cases, and a general medical certificate also uses the Sick Leave option.

What happens if the doctor does not issue a certificate for a cold and cough?

If the doctor does not issue a certificate, you will not receive one and your payment is not refunded. Issuing is always the independent doctor's decision.

Doctors decline about 2% of requests. The usual reasons are a name that does not match the ID, or symptoms and details that are inconsistent. A cold and cough with warning signs is not suitable for a chat consultation either, so the doctor will decline it and point you toward in person care.

The only refund exception is a verified technical fault reported within 24 hours.
