What is a fit to work certificate?

A fit to work certificate is a short medical note in which a doctor states that, based on the information reviewed, a person is fit to carry out their work.

Employers ask for one when someone joins the company or comes back after an illness. The note records the doctor's opinion on the date of review.

A fit to work certificate does not diagnose a condition. The note also does not approve leave or a return to work by itself, because that decision belongs to the employer.

People also call it a fitness to work certificate, a return to work note, a medical fitness certificate or an employee fitness certificate. On DrCertificate, every one of these goes through the Medical Fitness Certificate option.

When might you need a fit to work certificate?

You might need a fit to work certificate when an employer, school or agency wants a doctor's confirmation that you are well enough to work.

The request usually comes from HR, a recruitment agency or a placement coordinator. A sports club asking for a fitness note uses the same form option.

A different certificate fits better in other cases. If you are still unwell and need time off, a sick leave certificate is the right choice. If you can work but should stay home, ask for a work from home certificate, and if an airline wants clearance for a flight, look at the fit to fly pages.

  • Starting a new job

HR or a recruitment agency asks for a fitness note before your first day.

  • Returning after illness

Your employer wants confirmation that you have recovered enough to come back.

  • Work placements and internships

A school or host company asks students for a fitness note before a placement starts.

  • Agency and contract roles

A staffing agency needs a fitness note on file before sending you to a client.

What do employers, schools or airlines usually expect from a fit to work certificate?

Employers, schools and agencies usually expect a fit to work certificate to name you, show the date of the doctor's review and state plainly that you are fit for work. Most want it from a registered doctor in a readable format.

Rules differ by employer, institution and country. An employer in Manila, Cebu or Davao can follow different rules from a school in Singapore.

Singapore's Ministry of Manpower sets stricter rules for hazardous work. The Ministry says that when a medical examination shows an employee previously removed from exposure is fit for hazardous work, a designated workplace doctor needs to submit a certificate of fitness before that employee returns.

The Ministry also says the medical examination for migrant workers screens for 4 types of infectious diseases and checks if they are fit to work. An online chat review cannot replace either examination.

Before you apply, confirm these points with the recipient.

  • Online notes Ask whether they accept a medical note from an online doctor.
  • Their own form Check whether they need a form of their own instead of a standard certificate.
  • Dates Confirm the start or return date and how recent the note must be.

What does a fit to work certificate include?

A fit to work certificate from DrCertificate shows your details, the doctor's statement on your fitness for work and the details of the issuing doctor, in one PDF.

Fitness notes of this type generally carry the parts below.

Which option should you choose on the form for a fit to work certificate?

Choose the Medical Fitness Certificate option on the DrCertificate form for a fit to work certificate. The same option covers employee fitness, student fitness and good health certificates.

In the details box, write that you need a fit to work note, who will receive it and the date you start or return.

If no option looks right for your situation, email care@drcertificate.com before you pay.

What will the doctor ask you for a fit to work certificate?

The doctor will ask about your current health, any recent illness and the dates that matter for your work. Clear and consistent answers help the doctor reach a decision sooner.

Expect questions on these topics.

Keep any recent clinic notes or discharge papers ready, since they can help the doctor understand your recovery. The doctor may send follow-up questions in the chat. Answer them accurately, because details that do not match are a common reason for a decline.

  • Recent illness What you were unwell with and when it ended.
  • Current symptoms Whether anything still affects you today.
  • Your work The kind of job you do and its physical demands.
  • Dates The day you start or return to work.

Where can a fit to work certificate not be used?

A fit to work certificate from DrCertificate cannot be used for submission in India, for legal purposes or for insurance. Applicants must be at least 16 years old.

The service is for suitable non emergency situations only. If you have chest pain, trouble breathing or another urgent symptom, go to your nearest emergency department or call local emergency services now.

Acceptance is always decided by the recipient.

Check with your employer, school or agency that they accept online medical notes before you apply.

What happens if the doctor cannot issue your fit to work certificate?

If the doctor cannot issue your fit to work certificate, you will not receive one and the payment is not refunded. Doctors decline about 2% of requests.

Declines happen when details are wrong, for example when the name and ID do not match, or when the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent. A doctor will also decline when your situation needs an in person examination or tests. Return to hazardous work in Singapore and migrant worker medical examinations both need a designated or examining doctor in person.

The same applies when your recovery can only be judged with a physical check or lab results, so a local clinic is the right place to go.

Payments are non refundable, except for a verified technical fault reported within 24 hours. Questions go to care@drcertificate.com.

What does a fit to work certificate cost?

A fit to work certificate costs 25 SGD in Singapore, 399 pesos in the Philippines and 30 MYR in Malaysia. Prices in other countries depend on the country.

The fee covers the doctor's review and, if approved, the PDF certificate. Payment goes through Stripe and is non refundable.

Will my employer, school or airline accept a fit to work certificate?

Your employer, school or airline will accept a fit to work certificate only if its own policy allows online medical notes. DrCertificate encourages every applicant to check this before applying.

All doctors on the platform are registered with a medical council. A recipient who wants to verify the issuing doctor can look up the doctor's name and registration with that medical council.

If the recipient insists on its own form, a standard online certificate may not be enough. Ask whether a DrCertificate PDF can be used in place of that form, and apply only once they confirm it can.

A fit to work certificate says you are well enough to work, while a sick leave certificate says you need time off.

Travel notes cause the other common mix up. The fit to fly certificate is often confused with the unfit to travel certificate, which states the opposite outcome.
