What is a medical certificate for back pain?

A medical certificate for back pain is a signed PDF note from a certified doctor confirming that you consulted them about back pain and, in their judgement, need rest or a change to how you work for a stated period. Employers and universities usually ask for one to support an absence.

Most people with back pain choose the sick leave option. The work from home option suits someone who can manage a laptop at home but not a commute or a full day at an office desk.

The certificate records the doctor's decision after a chat consultation.

DrCertificate does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, so the certificate is not a treatment plan.

Which kinds of back pain can a doctor consider online?

A doctor on DrCertificate can consider common, non emergency back pain during a chat consultation. The presentations people describe most often are shown here.

The doctor decides whether any rest is needed and for how long, based on what you share. No type of back pain comes with a set number of days.

The NHS says back pain usually gets better within weeks, though it can last longer or keep coming back. Back pain that started after a serious accident, or that comes with the warning signs in the next section, is not suitable for chat and needs in person care.

  • Lower back strain

Pain and stiffness in the lower back after lifting, twisting, bending or a long day of physical work.

  • Muscle spasm

Sudden tightness in the back muscles that makes standing, sitting or turning painful.

  • Neck and upper back pain

Stiffness across the neck, shoulders or upper back, often after long hours at a desk or screen.

  • Pain spreading into one leg

Pain that travels from the lower back down one leg, sometimes called sciatica. Symptoms in both legs are a warning sign.

What should you tell the doctor about your back pain?

Tell the doctor where your back hurts, when the pain started and how bad it is. Clear details let the doctor make a decision without guessing.

Mention whether the pain spreads into a leg, what makes it worse, and how it affects sitting, standing or walking. Give the date it began and a severity score from 0 to 10.

If you already have an X-ray, MRI or clinic report, include the main findings.

State the leave dates you are asking for.

  • Location and spread

Lower back, upper back or neck, and whether pain or tingling reaches one leg.

  • Onset and duration

The date the pain began, what you were doing and whether it has happened before.

  • Severity and effect on work

A score from 0 to 10 and which work tasks you cannot manage.

When is back pain not suitable for an online certificate?

Back pain is not suitable for an online certificate when it comes with signs of a serious problem. The NHS advises emergency care if back pain comes with any of the signs listed here, so go to an emergency department or call your local emergency number.

DrCertificate is only for suitable non emergency situations and does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. A doctor may decline a request that cannot be handled safely by chat.

Get help in person first.

  • Both legs affected Pain, tingling, weakness or numbness in both legs.
  • Loss of feeling Numbness around the genitals or anus.
  • Bladder or bowel changes Trouble passing urine, leaking, or changes in bowel control.
  • Chest pain Back pain that comes with chest pain.
  • After a serious accident Back pain that started after a fall, crash or other serious injury.

What happens if the doctor does not issue a certificate for back pain?

If the doctor does not issue a certificate, you receive no certificate and the payment is not refunded. Issuing is always the independent doctor's decision.

Doctors decline about 2% of requests. The usual reasons are wrong details, a name that does not match the ID, or symptoms and details that do not add up. Back pain with warning signs is also not suitable for chat.

A certificate cannot be corrected once issued, unless the fault came from the medical team.
