What is a medical certificate for gastritis?

A medical certificate for gastritis is a document from a certified doctor confirming that you consulted them about your stomach symptoms and stating whether you need time away from work or study. The certificate records the doctor's decision. DrCertificate is a platform and does not diagnose, treat or prescribe.

For gastritis, most people choose the Sick Leave option, which also covers a general medical certificate. Others pick Work From Home when they can still do their job but should rest at home.

Employers and universities are the usual readers.

Every organisation sets its own rules on online notes, so check with yours before you apply.

Which kinds of gastritis can a doctor consider online?

A doctor on DrCertificate can consider mild to moderate gastritis that shows no warning signs. Gastritis means inflammation of the stomach lining. MedlinePlus says gastritis may last for only a short time, known as acute gastritis, or may linger for months to years, known as chronic gastritis.

The period of rest, if any, is the doctor's decision after reading your answers.

Nobody can promise a set number of days before the consultation. Gastritis with bleeding, sudden severe pain or signs of dehydration is not suitable for a chat consultation and needs in person care.

  • Acute gastritis

Sudden burning or gnawing pain in the upper belly, often after alcohol, anti inflammatory painkillers or a stomach bug. Acute gastritis often eases once the trigger is removed.

  • A flare of chronic gastritis

A worsening of long standing gastritis, for example during stress or after missed meals. Ongoing care for chronic gastritis belongs with your regular doctor.

  • Gastritis linked to H. Pylori

A bacterial infection that commonly causes gastritis. If you have already tested positive, say so in your form.

What should you tell the doctor about your gastritis?

Tell the doctor what you feel, when it started and how it affects your day. Clear and consistent details give the doctor what they need to decide on your request.

Make sure the name you enter matches your ID.

  • Your symptoms

Burning or aching upper belly pain, nausea or vomiting, bloating, and feeling full after small meals.

  • Timing and severity

The date symptoms began, how long they have lasted, and whether they are easing or getting worse.

  • Reports you already have

Mention any H. Pylori test or endoscopy result, plus painkillers or other medicines you take.

  • The leave you need

The dates you are asking the doctor to cover.

When is gastritis not suitable for an online certificate?

Gastritis is not suitable for an online certificate when it shows signs of bleeding or sudden severe pain. The NHS says to seek emergency care if you are vomiting bright red blood or your vomit looks like ground coffee.

The same NHS advice applies if your poo is black, sticky and foul smelling, or if you have severe tummy or chest pain that started suddenly. Go to an emergency department or call your local emergency number.

DrCertificate is only for suitable non emergency situations. The platform does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and the doctor may decline any request that is not right for a chat consultation.

Which certificate should you choose for gastritis?

Most people with gastritis need the Sick Leave option.

What happens if the doctor does not issue a certificate for gastritis?

If the doctor decides not to issue a certificate, you receive no certificate and your payment is not refunded. Issuing is always the doctor's independent decision.

Doctors decline about 2% of requests. The usual reasons are a name that does not match the ID, symptoms and details that do not add up, or signs that the case needs in person care.

A certificate cannot be corrected once issued unless the fault came from the medical team.
