What is a medical certificate for stomach infection?

A medical certificate for stomach infection is a signed note from a certified doctor stating that, based on your consultation, you were unwell and needed time away from work or study. The certificate typically shows your name, the consultation date and the rest period the doctor recommends.

Most people with a stomach infection need a sick leave certificate. A work from home certificate fits when you can still work but should stay home, near a bathroom and away from colleagues.

The certificate records the doctor's opinion. DrCertificate itself does not diagnose, treat or prescribe.

Employers, universities and schools are the usual recipients, and each one decides whether it accepts an online medical note.

Which kinds of stomach infection can a doctor consider online?

A doctor can consider the common, short lived forms of stomach infection online when symptoms are mild to moderate and you can keep fluids down. Viral gastroenteritis, food poisoning and travellers' diarrhoea are the usual examples.

The doctor decides whether you need rest and for how long. No set number of days is promised before the consultation.

For context, the NHS advises staying off school or work until you have gone at least 2 days without being sick or having diarrhoea. That advice explains why a stomach infection certificate often covers more than the day your symptoms began. The final period is still the doctor's call, based on what you share in the chat.

In most South East Asian countries, sick leave notes for generic symptoms go up to 7 days. Your own workplace or university may have its own rules on top of that.

Not every stomach infection belongs online.

Symptoms lasting longer than a week, blood in your stool or signs of serious dehydration call for a doctor who can examine you in person.

  • Viral gastroenteritis

Often called stomach flu. Brings sudden diarrhoea, vomiting and cramps that usually settle within days.

  • Food poisoning

Starts after eating contaminated food, with nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea, sometimes with a mild fever.

  • Travellers' diarrhoea

Loose stools and stomach cramps that start during or soon after a trip.

What should you tell the doctor about your stomach infection?

Tell the doctor what you feel, when it started and how bad it is. Clear, consistent details give the doctor what they need to decide.

Vague or conflicting answers slow things down.

  • Your symptoms

Diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps or a mild fever.

  • Onset and duration

The date symptoms began and whether they are easing or getting worse.

  • Severity

How often you are vomiting or passing loose stools, and whether you can keep fluids down.

  • Reports you already have

Any stool test result or notes from an earlier clinic visit.

  • Leave you are asking for

The dates you need off work or classes.

When is a stomach infection not suitable for an online certificate?

A stomach infection is not suitable for an online certificate when emergency warning signs are present. The NHS advises seeking emergency care for the signs listed below.

If you notice any of them, go to an emergency department or call your local emergency number straight away.

DrCertificate is only for suitable non emergency situations. The platform does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and the doctor may decline a request that is not right for a chat consultation.

  • Vomiting blood Or vomit that looks like ground coffee.
  • Sudden severe headache A headache that comes on fast and hard.
  • Sudden severe tummy ache Intense stomach pain that starts suddenly.
  • Severe difficulty breathing Struggling to breathe or catch your breath.
  • Confusion Feeling confused or disoriented.

Which certificate should you choose for a stomach infection?

Choose Sick Leave on the form if a stomach infection keeps you from work or classes. The table matches each form option to a situation. A general medical certificate uses the Sick Leave option.

What happens if the doctor does not issue a certificate for stomach infection?

If the doctor does not issue a certificate, you will not receive one and the payment is not refunded. Issuing is the doctor's independent decision, made after reviewing your chat consultation.

Doctors decline about 2% of requests. The usual reasons are details that are wrong, for example a name that does not match the ID, or symptoms and answers that do not add up. A stomach infection with emergency warning signs is also not suitable for chat.

The only refund exception is a verified technical fault reported within 24 hours.
