What is a medical certificate for COVID-19?
A medical certificate for COVID-19 is a note from a certified doctor confirming that you were assessed and, in the doctor's judgement, needed rest or a change in how you work. A medical certificate typically shows the patient's name, the consultation date and the dates covered.
DrCertificate does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. The certificate records the doctor's decision after a chat consultation, not a test result or a treatment plan.
For COVID-19, the Sick Leave option or the Work From Home option usually fits best.
Employers, universities and schools are the usual recipients.
Which kinds of COVID-19 can a doctor consider online?
A doctor on DrCertificate can consider mild COVID-19 that you are managing at home, including a positive test with light symptoms or none at all. Severe illness needs in person care instead.
Mild COVID-19 often looks like a cold or flu. Fever, cough, sore throat and tiredness are common, and body aches or a change in taste or smell can happen too. According to the NHS, most people with COVID-19 feel better within weeks, though recovery can take longer for others.
The doctor decides whether rest is needed and for how long, based on what you share in the consultation.
No set number of days is promised.
Mild COVID-19 at home
Flu, like symptoms that you are managing with rest and fluids at home.
Positive test with light or no symptoms
A positive home or clinic test where you need time away from other people.
Symptoms that linger
Tiredness or a cough that carries on after the infection. The doctor judges each case on what you describe.
Severe COVID-19
Serious breathlessness, chest pain or a fast worsening illness. Not suitable for a chat consultation. Seek in person care.
What should you tell the doctor about your COVID-19?
Tell the doctor which COVID-19 symptoms you have, when they began, how severe they feel and what leave period you are requesting. Clear and consistent details give the doctor what they need to decide.
Mention a positive test if you have one.
Your symptoms
Fever, cough, sore throat, tiredness or a change in taste or smell.
Onset and duration
The date symptoms started and whether they are improving.
Severity
Whether you can carry on daily tasks or need to rest.
Test results
Any home antigen or clinic test result you already have.
Leave requested
The dates you are asking the certificate to cover.
When is COVID-19 not suitable for an online certificate?
COVID-19 is not suitable for an online certificate if you have any emergency warning sign. The NHS says to seek emergency care for the signs listed here.
Go to the nearest emergency department or call your local emergency number.
DrCertificate is for suitable non emergency situations only. The platform does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and the doctor may decline any request that is not suitable for a chat consultation.
- Sudden chest pain Pain in the chest that comes on suddenly.
- Severe breathlessness Being so breathless you cannot say short sentences while resting.
- Coughing up blood Any blood when you cough.
- Collapsing or fainting Losing consciousness or falling down without warning.
Which certificate should you choose for COVID-19?
The Sick Leave option suits most people who are too unwell with COVID-19 to work or study. Use the table to match your situation to an option on the form.
| Form option | Suits a person with COVID-19 who | Typical note length |
|---|---|---|
| Sick Leave for university or work | Is too unwell to attend work or classes | Up to 7 days for generic symptoms in most South East Asian countries |
| Work From Home | Can still work but should stay home to avoid passing the virus on | Up to 7 days in most South East Asian countries |
| Unfit to Travel | Is too unwell to take a planned trip or flight | Set by the doctor |
| Medical Fitness Certificate | Is currently well and needs a general fitness note for work, travel or sport, not a recovery note | Generally valid for 30 days |

What happens if the doctor does not issue a certificate for COVID-19?
If the doctor does not issue a certificate for COVID-19, your request is closed and the payment is not refunded. Issuing is the doctor's independent decision, made after reviewing your details in the chat consultation.
Requests are usually declined when details are wrong, for example when the name and ID do not match, or when the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent. A request showing emergency warning signs is also not suitable for chat. Once issued, a certificate cannot be corrected unless the fault lies with the medical team.

Questions about medical certificates for COVID-19
Yes, you can mention a COVID-19 test result in the form, whether from a home antigen test or a clinic. The doctor reads it alongside your symptoms, onset date and severity. A test result helps, but the decision to issue a certificate still rests with the doctor after the chat consultation.
The doctor decides the leave period, if any, based on your consultation. In most South East Asian countries, sick leave and work from home notes for generic symptoms go up to 7 days. No set number of days is promised, and the period you request only guides the doctor.
Acceptance depends on your employer or institution, not on DrCertificate. All doctors on the platform are registered with a medical council, but rules differ between workplaces and countries. Check that your employer or university accepts online medical notes before you apply, since payments are non refundable.
No. DrCertificate offers only a digital chat consultation, with no video calls and no clinic visits. The doctor reviews your form and may ask questions in the chat. If your COVID-19 needs a physical examination, see a clinic or hospital in person instead of applying online.
Seek in person medical care if your COVID-19 symptoms get worse. Go to an emergency department straight away for sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness at rest, coughing up blood, or collapsing or fainting. DrCertificate is not an emergency service and cannot diagnose, treat or prescribe for COVID-19.
Approved certificates usually arrive by email as a PDF in about 30 minutes. Timing depends on when the doctor reviews your request and whether follow-up questions come up in the chat. If the doctor declines, no certificate is sent and the payment is not refunded.
You can apply if you are at least 16 and in one of the 10 South East Asian countries DrCertificate serves, from Singapore and Malaysia to the Philippines and Brunei. The certificate cannot be submitted in India or used for legal or insurance purposes.
