What is a medical certificate for ear infection?
A medical certificate for ear infection is a note from a certified doctor confirming that, after a chat consultation, you need time away from work or study, or can work from home, because of ear infection symptoms. The certificate records the doctor's opinion on your fitness for work or classes.
DrCertificate itself does not diagnose, treat or prescribe.
Most people with an ear infection choose a sick leave certificate. A work from home certificate suits people who can still do their job but should not commute or sit in a loud office. Employers, universities and schools are the usual places the note is shown to.
Which kinds of ear infection can a doctor consider online?
A doctor can consider the common, milder forms of ear infection through an online chat and then decides any rest period based on your answers. No set number of days is promised. The NHS says most ear infections clear up within 3 days, although symptoms can occasionally last up to a week.
Middle ear infection, known as otitis media, often follows a cold. Ear pain, a blocked or muffled feeling and a raised temperature are common signs.
Outer ear infection, or otitis externa, is often called swimmer's ear. The ear canal can feel itchy and sore, and the outer ear may hurt when touched or pulled.
Inner ear problems are different.
Labyrinthitis and similar inner ear conditions can cause spinning dizziness, nausea and trouble with balance. A person with these symptoms usually needs a face to face examination, so a chat request for inner ear symptoms may be declined. Hearing loss, swelling around the ear or fluid leaking from the ear also point to in person care instead of a chat consultation.
What should you tell the doctor about your ear infection?
Tell the doctor which ear is affected, what you feel, when it started and how bad it is. Clear, consistent details let the doctor make a fair decision quickly.
Use the same name that appears on your ID.

Ear pain, a blocked or muffled feeling, itching or a raised temperature.

Leave requested

When is an ear infection not suitable for an online certificate?
An ear infection is not suitable for an online certificate when warning signs point to urgent in person care. The NHS advises an urgent doctor appointment if you have ear infection symptoms together with any of the signs below.
DrCertificate is for suitable non emergency situations only. The platform does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and the doctor may decline a request that is not right for a chat consultation.
See a clinic first if any of these apply.
- Feeling generally unwell Ear symptoms combined with feeling unwell all over.
- Very high temperature A fever that is very high alongside ear pain.
- Swelling around the ear Any swelling on or around the ear.
- Fluid from the ear Fluid or discharge coming out of the ear.
- Hearing changes A change in hearing or new hearing loss.
Which certificate should you choose for an ear infection?
Choose the Sick Leave option if your ear infection keeps you from work or classes. The other form options suit people who can work remotely, need to postpone travel or need proof of fitness once symptoms settle.
| Form option | Ear infection situation it suits | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Sick Leave, for university or work | Ear pain, fever or muffled hearing stops you working or studying | Also used for a general medical certificate. Notes for generic symptoms go up to 7 days in most South East Asian countries |
| Work From Home | You can work but commuting or a loud office makes the ear worse | Notes go up to 7 days in most South East Asian countries |
| Unfit to Travel | A planned trip is coming up and blocked or painful ears make travel unwise | The doctor decides based on your symptoms and dates |
| Medical Fitness Certificate | Symptoms have settled and you need proof you are fit to return to work, sport or travel | Covers fit to work, fit to fly and sports fitness. Generally valid for 30 days. Reviewed 9 am to 9 pm IST Monday to Saturday and 10 am to 8 pm IST Sunday |

What happens if the doctor does not issue a certificate for ear infection?
If the doctor does not issue a certificate, you will not receive one and the payment is not refunded. Every decision to issue belongs to the independent doctor who reviews your request.
Doctors decline about 2% of requests. The usual reasons are wrong details, like a name that does not match the ID, or symptoms and details that do not add up. A doctor may also decline an ear infection case that needs a physical examination.
The only exception to the refund rule is a verified technical fault reported within 24 hours.
A certificate cannot be corrected once issued unless the medical team made the error. Questions go to care@drcertificate.com.

Questions about medical certificates for ear infection
Yes, you can mention any results or reports you already have when you describe your ear infection in the form or the chat. A note from an earlier clinic visit or a hearing test result gives the doctor more context. Reports are not required, and the doctor decides what is relevant.
The doctor decides the leave period after the chat consultation, based on your symptoms. In most South East Asian countries, sick leave notes for generic symptoms go up to 7 days. The NHS says most ear infections clear up within 3 days, although symptoms can last up to a week.
Acceptance is decided by your employer or institution, not by DrCertificate. All doctors on the platform are registered with a medical council, and approved certificates arrive as a PDF by email. Before you apply, check that the place you will submit the note to accepts online medical certificates.
No. DrCertificate offers digital chat consultations only, with no video or in person appointments. If your ear infection needs a doctor to look inside the ear, visit a local clinic instead. The chat doctor may decline a request that needs a physical check.
Seek in person care quickly if your ear infection gets worse. The NHS advises an urgent doctor appointment if you feel generally unwell or have a very high temperature. Swelling around the ear, fluid leaking from it and any change in hearing need the same urgent check.
Anyone aged 16 or over in one of the 10 served South East Asian countries can apply for a non emergency ear infection certificate. Enter a name that matches your ID, because a mismatch is a common reason for a decline. The certificate is not for use in India, legal matters or insurance.
Yes, you can choose the Unfit to Travel option if an ear infection makes a planned trip unwise. The doctor reviews your symptoms and travel dates, then decides whether to issue the note. Remember that the certificate cannot be used for insurance of any kind.
