What is a medical certificate for migraine?

A medical certificate for migraine is a document from a certified doctor confirming that, in the doctor's view, you need rest or adjusted work because of a migraine attack.

Most people with migraine choose a sick leave certificate or a work from home certificate. You usually show it to an employer, a university or a school to explain an absence.

The certificate does not come with a diagnosis or treatment plan from DrCertificate. The platform connects you with independent doctors and does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. Migraine is classed as a neurological condition under ICD-10 code G43 in the International Classification of Diseases, so a doctor can accept it as a genuine reason for time off. The decision to issue still rests with the doctor.

Which kinds of migraine can a doctor consider online?

A doctor on DrCertificate can consider a common migraine attack when the symptoms are familiar to you and no warning signs are present. The doctor decides whether rest is needed and for how long, based on what you share in the consultation.

No fixed number of days is promised.

Migraine attacks usually last between 4 hours and 3 days, according to the NHS. That window helps a doctor judge what rest, if any, fits your attack.

Not every form of migraine suits a chat consultation. A first ever severe headache, a migraine that brings weakness on one side of the body, or any attack with the warning signs listed further down needs a doctor in person.

  • Migraine without aura

The most common type, marked by a severe, throbbing headache on one side of the head.

  • Migraine with aura

Visual changes like flashing lights or zigzag lines appear before or during the headache.

  • Chronic migraine

Headaches on 15 or more days a month. A doctor looks at the current attack you describe.

  • Vestibular migraine

Dizziness and balance problems, with or without head pain.

What should you tell the doctor about your migraine?

Tell the doctor what your migraine feels like, when it started and how it affects your day. Clear, honest details help the doctor decide whether a certificate fits your situation.

Vague answers slow things down.

  • Symptoms

Throbbing head pain, which side it is on, nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to light or sound, and any aura.

  • Onset and duration

The date the attack began, how long it has lasted and whether it matches past attacks.

  • Severity

Whether you can look at a screen, travel or work right now.

  • Earlier records

Any past diagnosis, scan result or neurologist's note you already have.

  • Leave requested

The dates you are asking the certificate to cover.

When is migraine not suitable for an online certificate?

Migraine is not suitable for an online certificate when it comes with signs of an emergency. Call your local emergency number or go to a hospital if you notice any of the signs listed here, which the NHS names as reasons to seek emergency care.

DrCertificate is for suitable non emergency situations and does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. A doctor may decline any request that cannot be safely assessed by chat.

  • Sudden, intense headache A headache that came on suddenly and is severely painful.
  • Speech or memory problems Trouble speaking or remembering things.
  • Loss of vision Partial or total loss of sight.
  • Seizure Any fit or seizure during the attack.
  • One sided weakness Weakness in the arm or leg on one side of the body.

Which certificate should you choose for migraine?

Choose the Sick Leave option if a migraine attack keeps you away from work or classes. The right option depends on whether you can work, travel or study during the attack.

A general medical certificate also uses the Sick Leave option.

Form optionWhen it suits someone with migraine
Sick Leave, for university or workThe attack stops you from working or attending classes for now.
Work From HomeYou can still work at home in a dim, quiet room, but the commute or office lighting would worsen symptoms.
Unfit to TravelAn attack makes a planned trip or flight unsafe or impractical.
Medical FitnessYour employer, school or sports club asks for a note on your current fitness to work, study or play.

What happens if the doctor does not issue a certificate for migraine?

The doctor alone decides whether to issue a certificate, and that decision is independent of DrCertificate. A request may not suit chat when the name and ID do not match, when the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent, or when warning signs point to in person care.

If the doctor declines, the payment is not refunded.

A certificate cannot be corrected once issued unless the fault came from the medical team. Double check your name and ID before you submit. For any question, email care@drcertificate.com.
