Who needs a medical certificate in Laos?

Office workers, factory staff, students and travellers are the groups in Laos who commonly need a medical certificate. Each group faces a different deadline, from an HR request to a missed exam to a flight that will not wait.

The rainy season runs roughly from May to October and brings dengue, colds and stomach bugs to Vientiane, Pakse and the river towns. A worker who wakes with a fever is in no state to queue at a clinic just for a note. Students at the National University of Laos and other colleges may need proof of illness to explain an absence or a missed test.

Visitors face a different problem.

A traveller who falls ill in Luang Prabang or Vang Vieng before a flight out of Wattay International Airport may want a doctor's view on whether flying is wise. An online request lets each of these people ask a doctor from wherever they are. Whether the employer, school or airline accepts the result is a separate question, covered further down this page.

Which medical certificate do you need in Laos?

Four options on the DrCertificate form

The right certificate depends on what your employer, school or airline asked for. The DrCertificate form has four options, and each certificate below maps to one of them.

Sick leave certificate

For time off work or university when you are too unwell to attend. Choose Medical Certificate, Sick Leave on the form. A general medical certificate uses this same option.

Work from home certificate

For days when you can still work but a doctor agrees you should stay home, for example with a contagious cough. Choose Medical Certificate, Work From Home on the form.

How do you get an online sick leave certificate in Laos?

You get an online sick leave certificate in Laos by completing the DrCertificate form, paying through Stripe and waiting for a doctor's decision by email. The whole exchange happens in writing.

There are no video or in person consultations.

What should you have ready before you apply?

Have your personal details, a working email address and the dates you need covered before you open the form. Five minutes of preparation saves a slow back and forth with the doctor.

  • Personal details

Your full name and ID details, which must match each other, plus an email address you can check right away.

  • Reason and dates

Why you need the certificate and the first and last day it should cover.

  • Requested wording

Any form, format or wording your employer, school or airline asked for.

  • Symptoms and records

When symptoms started, how they affect you, and any existing prescriptions or reports.

What happens when the doctor reviews your request?

The doctor reads your symptoms, dates and stated reason, then decides independently whether a certificate is appropriate. Paying the fee does not guarantee a certificate.

The doctor checks that your name and ID match and that the symptoms you describe fit the leave or fitness note you asked for. If something is unclear, the doctor may ask follow up questions in the chat, and quick, honest answers help the review move along.

Exaggerating symptoms to get more days often backfires, because inconsistent details are a common reason for a decline. Write what happened, in plain words.

DrCertificate does not diagnose, treat or prescribe.

The platform connects you with the doctor, and the doctor writes the certificate only when the doctor finds it appropriate. In most South East Asian countries, sick leave and work from home notes go up to 7 days for generic symptoms, and fitness notes are generally valid for 30 days.

What if the doctor cannot issue your certificate?

If the doctor cannot issue your certificate, the request is declined and the fee is not refunded. Doctors decline about 2% of requests when the name and ID do not match or when the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent.

A decline does not mean you are well. It means an online review was not enough.

Visit a clinic or hospital in Laos in person if you still need a certificate. For a technical fault, email care@drcertificate.com within 24 hours, because a verified technical fault is the one case where a refund applies.

What does an online medical certificate cost in Laos?

The fee for Laos is shown in the online form before you pay. For reference, the same service costs 25 SGD in Singapore, 399 pesos in the Philippines and 30 MYR in Malaysia.

The fee covers the doctor's review and, if approved, the PDF certificate by email. Payment goes through Stripe.

The fee is non refundable, including when the doctor declines.

How quickly can you get a medical certificate in Laos?

A DrCertificate request from Laos takes about 30 minutes to reach a decision. Missing details, a name that does not match the ID, or follow-up questions in the chat add time, so fill the form carefully and stay near your phone.

Laos runs 90 minutes ahead of India Standard Time. Fitness cases are handled from 9 am to 9 pm IST Monday to Saturday, which is 10:30 am to 10:30 pm in Laos, and from 10 am to 8 pm IST on Sunday, which is 11:30 am to 9:30 pm in Laos.

Will your employer, school or airline in Laos accept it?

Your employer, school or airline in Laos decides whether to accept an online certificate, so ask them before you apply. All doctors on the platform are registered with a medical council, but each organisation sets its own rules on online notes.

Lao law does link paid sick leave to a medical certificate. Article 56 of the Labor Law, Law No. 43/NA, gives workers paid monthly up to 30 days of sick leave a year on full pay when they present a medical certificate. Workers paid by the day, hour or unit, or on contracts for a set piece of work, are paid during sick leave only after working more than 90 days.

Article 129 covers longer absences. An employee with medical certification who takes more than one month of consecutive leave for an illness or accident not caused by work receives salary from the employer for one month, or thirty days, each year.

The law does not say whether an online note qualifies.

Fit to fly and unfit to fly rules differ by airline. Check with yours first.

When is an online certificate not right for you in Laos?

An online certificate is not right for you in Laos if you face an emergency, need a document for legal or insurance use, or are under 16. In an emergency, call 1195 for an ambulance or go straight to the nearest hospital.

DrCertificate certificates are not for legal purposes, insurance claims or submission in India.

Choose an in person visit at a local clinic or hospital when symptoms are severe or getting worse, when you need tests or treatment, or when you need leave longer than about a week. Chest pain, trouble breathing and a high fever that will not come down all need a doctor in the room, not a chat window.
