Who needs a medical certificate in Myanmar?

Office staff, factory workers, students and travellers in Myanmar are the groups who ask for medical certificates most often. Each needs a note for a different reason, from a missed shift to a delayed flight.

Workers come first.

The ILO's overview of the Leave and Holidays Act 1951 and its 2018 Rules links paid sick leave to producing a medical certificate. A fever that keeps a Yangon office worker or a garment worker at home can still call for paperwork.

Weather plays a part too. The monsoon months, roughly May to October, bring heavy rain, flooded streets and a rise in dengue and stomach infections. Getting to a clinic while unwell in that weather is hard work.

Students at universities in Yangon and Mandalay sometimes need a note for a missed exam or class. Travellers passing through Yangon International Airport may fall ill before a flight and need an unfit to travel note, while others need a fitness note before a trip.

An online request lets each of these people start from home on a phone. Whether the employer, university or airline accepts the note is their decision.

Which medical certificate do you need in Myanmar?

Four options appear on the DrCertificate application form

The right certificate depends on why you need it. DrCertificate's application form shows four options, and each one covers a set of everyday needs.

Not sure which to pick? Describe the purpose in the form so the doctor can see what the note is for.

Sick leave certificate

For days missed at work, university or school because of illness. Choose the Sick Leave option on the form. A general medical certificate uses the same option.

Work from home certificate

For when you can still work but should stay home while unwell. Choose the Work From Home option on the form.

Medical fitness certificate

For proof of good health for a job, studies or sport. Sports fitness, fit to fly and fit to work requests all use the Medical Fitness Certificate option.

Unfit to fly certificate

For when illness means you should not travel and your airline wants a doctor's note. Choose the Unfit to Travel option on the form.

What should you have ready before you apply?

Have your personal details, a working email address, the reason and dates for the certificate, and any wording your organisation asked for ready before you start.

Preparing these first saves time and avoids follow up questions.

  • Your details

Full name and ID details that match each other, plus an email address you check often.

  • Reason and dates

Why you need the certificate and the dates it should cover.

  • Requested wording

Any form, format or wording your employer, school or airline asked for.

  • Symptoms and records

When symptoms started, how they affect you, and any existing reports or prescriptions.

What happens when the doctor reviews your request?

The doctor reads everything you submitted and decides whether a certificate is appropriate. The review looks at your symptoms, when they started, the dates you asked for and whether your name and ID details match.

Questions may follow.

If something is unclear, the doctor can ask follow up questions in the digital chat. Clear, honest answers help the doctor reach a decision sooner.

DrCertificate is a platform, not a clinic. The platform does not diagnose, treat or prescribe, and paying the fee does not guarantee a certificate. The doctor issues one only after finding it appropriate for your situation and declines the request when the details do not support it.

What if the doctor cannot issue your certificate?

If the doctor cannot issue your certificate, the request is declined and the fee is not refunded. Doctors decline about 2% of requests, usually when the name and ID do not match or the symptoms and details shared are inconsistent.

Payments are non refundable. The one exception is a verified technical fault reported within 24 hours.

After a decline, visit a local clinic or hospital in Myanmar for an in person assessment. For questions about your request, email care@drcertificate.com.

How quickly can you get a medical certificate in Myanmar?

DrCertificate's typical turnaround is about 30 minutes after you submit and pay. Missing details, a name that does not match your ID, or follow up questions from the doctor can stretch that time.

Fitness cases follow set hours.

Doctors handle fitness requests from 9 am to 9 pm IST, Monday to Saturday and 10 am to 8 pm IST on Sunday. Myanmar time runs one hour ahead of IST, which means 10 am to 10 pm Monday to Saturday and 11 am to 9 pm on Sunday in Myanmar.

Will your employer, school or airline in Myanmar accept it?

Your employer, school or airline decides whether to accept an online certificate, so check with them before you apply. DrCertificate encourages every customer to confirm that online medical notes are accepted at the place of submission.

Myanmar's labour rules give workers good reason to keep proper paperwork. The ILO's overview of the Leave and Holidays Act 1951 and Rules 2018 says an employee with at least six months of service who produces a medical certificate is entitled to 30 days of paid sick leave a year, paid by the employer.

Newer staff have rights too. Under the ILO's overview of Rule 43, a worker with less than six months of service and without Social Security Board insurance can ask for medical leave without pay.

An agreement for less favourable sick leave that reduces the employer's liability is null and void under section 9 of the Act, according to the same ILO overview.

Airlines set their own rules for fit to fly and unfit to fly notes. Ask yours what it needs.

When is an online certificate not right for you in Myanmar?

An online certificate is not right for emergencies, legal matters, insurance claims or anyone under 16. In a medical emergency in Myanmar, call 192 for an ambulance or go straight to the nearest hospital.

DrCertificate certificates are not for legal purposes and must not be used for insurance. The certificate is also not for submission in India.

Visit a doctor in person at a local clinic or hospital if symptoms are severe, getting worse, or need a physical examination, tests or treatment. Chest pain, trouble breathing, a high fever that will not come down and heavy bleeding all need urgent in person care.

Who issues your medical certificate?

Each request goes to a doctor with an MBBS, MD or MS qualification. All doctors on the platform are registered medical council doctors.

  • The doctor decides

DrCertificate is a platform. The doctor alone decides whether to issue a certificate, and doctors decline about 2% of requests, usually when details do not match or symptoms are inconsistent.
